EVE Evolved: Could permadeath work in EVE?

EVE Evolved title image Permadeath has been one of the most contentuous features in online gaming since as far back as I can remember. The feeling of permanently losing a character you've spent months training up and playing with because of a single mistake or lag spike would be horrifying to most people, yet the idea continues to intrigue both players and developers. Diablo II's Hardcore mode is probably the most successful permadeath mechanic in an online game to date, separating the hardcore players onto a different server so that they develop their own game economy and leaderboard. Several MMOs have experimented with permadeath servers or mechanics over the years, but they're almost always reverted as failures.

In a recent presentation at EVE Vegas 2014, EVE Online developer CCP Rise discussed the idea of permadeath characters as something he's wanted to add to the game for the past few years. This is particularly problematic for EVE as the game uses passive time-based skill training and the whole game takes place on one massive shard. The hardcore players would need to have enough incentive to risk their characters' lives on a daily basis, their abilities would have to be balanced with non-hardcore players, and abuse of the system to suicide gank players would need to be handled. But if those problems are tackled, is it possible that there's a place for permadeath in EVE?

In this edition of EVE Evolved, I look at how permadeath could be added to EVE Online without disrupting the rest of the game.

Mortal Online Population ~4000 Subscriptions

We all know that Mortal Online has never officially released population numbers. Here’s all the players I could find searching through the new chronicles database. Keep in mind this does not include non guilded players. This also does not accurately represent the number of subs. Every subscription can have at most 3 accounts. It is obvious in some guilds there are people who own 2 or 3 accounts and name all there characters with a similar name. There are some groups of players that call themselves a guild on the forums, but are not officially in a guild in game. The same is true in IRC.

I got a little creative when I was searching through the Chronicles database. I wouldn’t call it hacking but I think it would be fare to say most users would not be able to get this information. From what I found there are a total of 83 different guilds. I believe every account can only start a single guild, but I could be mistaken. Please comment if you can create multiple guilds with a single account. I believe it is also possible to remove yourself from the Chronicles so you do not come up in a search. I could be mistaken on this. Again please comment if you know for sure.

By my math I get a total of 2153 guilded players. That means not including non guilded players and assuming all accounts use all 3 character spots and all 3 of those characters are guilded that means there’s a minimum of 718 total subscriptions. If you want a more realistic number of total subscriptions were looking at around 4000 assuming many players are not guilded and not every subscription has all 3 characters in a guild.

With 4000 subs were talking about starvault brining in about $60,000 USD a month. That’s probably about enough to hire around 7 full time programmers and still have enough funds left over for server hosting and other expenses. Plus I’m sure they can get a few intern slaves in there for free. As far as StarVault going under and Mortal Online closing I don’t see that happening anytime soon.

What I find interesting is that some guild that flood the forums with there nonsense seem in reality to be much smaller guilds than they really are. This list really separates true guilds with real power and groups of forum warriors.

It seems like [CIR] has more people trolling IRC then they do actually subscriptions. It’s possible most of them just go untagged in game, but use there [CIR] tag in IRC.

ThievesGuild has 45 members. That means there’s at least 45 assholes running around towns stealing stuff. I really hate these guys so I’m going to list all there names here too. I highly suggest any guild that controls a city adds these players to there gray list or there kill on site list.

I hear many smaller guilds complaining about how they don’t own a keep and therefor really didn’t get much out of the TC expansion. I call shenanigans! It really wouldn’t seem that difficult for a small group of maybe a dozen assholes to come together and take out all of a larger guilds control towers. In fact we see that happening already. Just judging by the size of some of these smaller keep less guilds all they would need to do is ally with 1 other smaller keep less guild and they would significantly outnumber a guild that already controls a keep. I really don’t think it would be that hard for an alliance of 3 or 4 smaller guilds to take the keep of a large guild with few allies.

Here’s the complete list of guilds below. If you want to find out who’s in each guild just type the guild name in search in the Chronicles.

Is Mortal Online the closest thing to a Skyrim MMO?

Is Mortal Online the closest thing to a Skyrim MMO? I think so, and here’s why.

I think it’s safe to assume everyone who reads this blog knows what Skyrim is. It’s a vast single player role playing game with many sandbox features and an exciting open story line that lets you complete quests (or not complete quests) in whatever fashion you want. You see a mountain in this distance and you want to check it out. Than just do your quests later and walk or ride a mount to that mountain. There’s really very little artificial walls keeping you out of different content. For the most part the same is true with Mortal Online.

Here’s a little table to help compare the two games.

SkyrimMortal Online
Huge View Distance were you can explore almost everything you see.YesYes
Craftable Armor and WeaponsYes you can craft weapons and armorYou have to go to NASA to calculate how many different weapons Mortal Online has. However there is only really 3 different styles of armor
DragonsAwesome believable battles with DragonsSorry no Dragons but you can hit a wisent in the ass with a polearm.
gather raw materials refine it and eventually use types of raw materials for craftingYes, but it's more annoying than funYes the raw material and crafting system in Mortal intense.
Great Mob/NPC AIYesSorry mobs in Mortal Online are usually retarded.
Play with friends or your guild in massive multiplayerNoYes large scale 50+ player battles which after the TC patch works fairly flawlessly
Relatively bug freeNo, There are still some minor bugs but with the recent patch it's really not that bad.Glearing annoying bugs. It's better than it was at launch but Mortal still has some annoying bugs.
Working economySort of. I hardly noticed how my actions in game had any impact on the overall games economy. Sort of yes. It's annoying to have to scream in town for hours to buy a horse but I believe it's still better than Skyrim
FPS style combatYes very much like Mortal OnlineYes very much like to Skyrim

Skyrim Screenshot

Both games have a fairly advanced thievery system.  It’s rare these days to see an MMO were players can steal from another players inventory.  This create a sense of excitement when your in cities that you just don’t get in other games.

While in Skyrim you don’t have to worry about other people killing you because it’s a single player game you do have to worry about NPC’s and there’s really no true safezones.  In Mortal Online anyone can try to kill you at anytime.  There are guarded cities but if you don’t call the NPC guard in time your going to die, and there are plans on making Mortal’s guards even more like Skyrims guards in later patches.

All in all I would say Mortal Online is the closest thing we got to a Skyrim MMO until Bethesda decides to create one.  Mortal Online is not without it’s flaws, but were not going to get another MMO like it for years to come.
